Letters: Haitian liberation and the struggle for freedom

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my appreciation for a well-written article by Jacques Fleury,”How Haiti Earned Its Place in Black History.” His piece impressed me by his personal touch of the history of Haitian liberation and the struggle that all people of color experienced on the road to freedom.

His article echoes the belief in the power of human spirit to rise above acts of hatred, brutality and even natural catastrophes. Martin Luther King, Jr said, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.”

Jacques possesses a unique gift that must be shared with the world. Thank you for giving him the opportunity to express his talent in your newspaper. Sincerely,

Henry Burrell Somerville, MA

Dear Editor: I wanted to send you a note to say how well researched, written and interesting the above referenced piece was by Jacques Fleury. I had not known about the rebellions in Haiti and felt enlightened by the article. I look forward to the next issue of Spare Change and many more articles by Mr. Fleury. Sincerely,

Carolyn Mapes Belmont
