My name is Gerald Harrell. I’ve been a Spare Change News vendor since 1992 and want to support organizations that help homeless veterans. I know people say that Mayor Walsh has eliminated veteran homelessness, but there is much more to be done. Too many people who served our country are still on the streets.
I am a Vietnam veteran (Marines) who was once homeless, and I can tell you that it isn’t easy to start your life over after combat. Some people never get over what happened to them even if they come home. Some have disabilities and injuries that make getting a regular job impossible.
That’s why I want you to know about an event held on Sunday Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s held at Harvard Stadium, and it’s a stair-climbing event to raise funds to build a home for a severely injured veteran who cannot do regular work to earn a living. The way I see it, he fought and almost died for his country to give us freedom. The least we can do is give him a home.
Last year, this event raised around $35,000 to help finance building a home for Sergeant Chris Gomes (Army) who was severely injured in Iraq and lost his leg. All funds raised from this event go to Homes for Our Troops, a Taunton-based charity that builds specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans from the Afghan and Iraq wars.
Please consider participating along with some of us from the Spare Change News community to support those who sacrificed for freedom.
