Last month Lt. Governor Karyn Polito presented a report by The Governor’s Council to Address Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence on implement Chapter 260: An Act Relative to Domestic Violence, Governor Charlie Baker’s Office said.
Polito presented the report December 9, Baker’s Office said in a press release. Chapter 260 was sponsored by House Speaker Robert DeLeo and was unanimously signed into law in 2014,
“This council has worked diligently to implement Chapter 260 and execute much needed reforms to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault and make our communities safer,” Polito, who serves as council chairwoman, said in the release. “Moving forward, our team is committed to bridging the gap between services and agencies and working together to provide support for survivors and mitigate future instances of violence for our loved ones.”
The council last met in April to reevaluate and elevate implementation issues within the administration. The most recent meeting convened in the State House on December 9th, 2015, to discuss both coping services for victims and harsher penalties for offenders.
Attorney General Maura Healy was also in attendance, and thanked Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Polito, Tammy Mello, and the Council for commitment to the issues.
“We have made a lot of progress in strengthening our laws in Massachusetts to assist victims and hold offenders accountable, but there is more work to be done to put an end to this epidemic,” Healey said in a statement released by Baker’s Office.
