As we sweat through summer, I have a few things on my mind:
The Supreme Court
The court justices or should I say jesters have handed down some rather insane rulings in the last couple of weeks: stomping all over abortion rights, the Hobby Lobby ruling is just plain stupid, letting employers opt out of paying medical bill based on their religious beliefs is just well…stupid. What is next, let’s see: employers can opt out of paying someone because they don’t believe in gay marriage. Don’t laugh, with this court, anything is possible. The buffer zones around abortion clinics is a safety issue, I was working a couple of blocks away from the clinic in Brookline where a gunman went on a shooting rampage, and yet knowing this the jesters shot it down. Saying it’s a first amendment issue, please, I guess I shouldn’t be upset with all of the Justices, just the morons on the right who are no doubt doing conservatives dirty work. My question is why don’t they have term limits. Presidents do, why don’t the people who uphold the Constitution have them as well, Once you are appointed to the Court, you are there until you retire or die, and at the rate we’re going, we will have to wait until one of them keels over to even things out. Let’s just hope all are rights haven’t keeled over first.
Massachusetts Casinos
Here we go again, the casino fight goes on. Now it has become a ballot question, that’s right boys and girls, we are still fighting over this as the doomsayers are once again crying about all the negativity casinos will bring, and most of the noise is coming from Boston itself. Will someone, anyone please tell me why a city that wants to be known as a world class city almost always shoots down anything that could boost it’s chances of being called world class? Look my fellow Bostonians, I understand better than anyone the dangers of addiction, (I don’t gamble, but I get it). But there are ways to handle that, This is about jobs and the economic health of Massachusetts. If everyone works together on this instead of against each other all will turn out fine. On the other hand, if casinos get denied here you can forget about attracting world class anything. No one is going to want to deal with us stuffy New Englanders,
While we are on the subject of world-class events:
The Olympics
I will say this only once: Hell no. Why in the world would anyone want to bring that mess here? Did anyone see Sochi and that was just the Winter Games? Everything I have ever read about hosting the Olympics is BAD, BAD, BAD. Even now, as Brazil is hosting the World Cup there is talk over the internet about how the summer games there in 2016 is going to be a disaster for it’s economy, which is bad enough already. Where would you build a stadium? Where are you going to house the Olympic Village, how much will it cost and who is going to pay for it? (Well we all know the answer to that question). What scares me the most though is what about the homeless? What about those living in poverty? In Brazil, while everyone is basking in the glow of the Cup and the coming of the Olympics, thousands of Brazilians live in poverty, but you won’t see that on ESPN. No doubt the homeless were pushed out, probably shipped out somewhere they could not be seen. Do you really want the Olympics here? Okay, I will say it one more time: HELL NO.
